Dennis Oppenheim war ein amerikanischer Konzeptkünstler, dessen Werk skulpturale Installationen, Performance und Film umfasste. Im Umgang mit esoterischen Vorstellungen von Erfahrungsphänomenen, Natur und gesellschaftlichen Strukturen versuchte Oppenheim, wie auch die Arbeiten seines Zeitgenossen Robert Smithson, die Skulptur aus traditionellen Modi auszubrechen und Fragen zu stellen, anstatt ästhetische Zugehörigkeiten zu signalisieren. „Die meisten meiner Arbeiten entstehen aus Ideen. Normalerweise kann ich von jeder Idee nur einige wenige Versionen machen. Land Art und Body Art waren besonders starke Konzepte, die viele Permutationen erlaubten“, überlegte er einmal, „aber nichtsdestotrotz fand ich mich in dem Wunsch wieder, mich in etwas anderes zu vertiefen.“

Arbeiten befinden sich in internationalen Sammlungen, wie u.a. im Denver Museum of Art, USA; der Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, USA; dem Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Frankreich; der National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., USA; dem Museum of Modern Art in New York, USA; der Tate Gallery in London, UK.
