Am offenen Sonntag nimmt eine Auswahl von Galerien links der Limmat teil.

In der Ausstellung „The Best of Photography“ konfrontiert die Fabian & Claude Walter Galerie den Betrachter mit den verschiedenen Sehweisen der Fotografie, die den

Diskurs über Bild und Abbild, Realität und Fiktion herausfordern. Präsentiert wird eine qualitative Auswahl an photografischen Werken der Künstler Sonja Braas, Balthasar Burkhard, Peter Hebeisen und Christian Vogt. Die Galerie Christian Roellin zeigt Arbeiten von Thomas Floerschutz, Ilkka Halso und Robert Lebeck.

Die in New York lebende Künstlerin Sonja Braas (*1968, Siegen) spielt in ihren Fotografien mit der Wahrnehmung des Betrachters. Gezeigt werden Werke aus ihrer aktuellen Serie „The Quiet of Dissolution“, auf denen Naturgewalten oder Naturkatastrophen bis zu deren extremsten Formen dargestellt sind. Jedoch fehlt jeglicher Hinweis auf die Umstände der Entstehung oder auf den Ort des Ereignisses. Aktuell sind Braas Arbeiten im Palazzo Strozzi, Florenz sowie im Kunstmuseum Bonn zu sehen.

Balthasar Burkhard (*1944, Bern) zählt zu den grossen Meistern der internationalen Fotokunst. Er wurde berühmt für seine klassischen S/W-Fotografien im Grossformat, von denen einige exemplarisch in „The Best of Photography“ präsentiert werden. Seine Arbeiten rufen meist Irritationen hervor, da sie den Betrachter in ein Wechselspiel von inneren und äusseren Bildern zwingen. Die Bilder haben im Kopf des Künstlers eine imaginäre Existenz, bevor sie als Fotografie eine reale Existenz erhalten. Elementare Themen wie Gebirge, Wüste, Meer, Tier, Baum oder Stadt werden gezielt gesucht und inhaltlich wie auch ästhetisch ergründet.

Der Titel der in der Ausstellung gezeigten Fotografien von Peter Hebeisen (*1956, Bern) „European Battlefields“ ist signifikant: „Europäische Schlachtfelder“. Mit Schlachtfeld assoziiert man Gräuel, Krieg, Tod und Verletzte. Nichts dergleichen ist in den Bildern Hebeisens zu sehen. Es sind verlassene ausgewogene Landschaftsbilder, einst europäische Kriegsschauplätze. Das Gezeigte ist weit entfernt von dem, was man weithin unter Kriegsfotografie versteht. Dabei geht es dem Künstler nicht um eine Dokumentation der Vergangenheit, sondern um eine fotografische Dokumentation des Dramas.

Christian Vogt (*1946, Basel) rückt als einziger Künstler in der Ausstellung den Aspekt des Körpers in den Vordergrund. Von ihm werden drei Fotografien gezeigt, – ein Akt, ein Halbakt sowie ein vergrösserter Mund – in denen das Verhältnis zwischen sichtbarer Realität und fotografischem Bild thematisiert wird. Zeitgleich zur Präsentation im g27 zeigt die Fotostiftung Schweiz, Christian Vogt in der Einzelausstellung „Today I‘ ve been you“.

In the exhibition The Best of Photography, Fabian & Claude Walter Galerie confront the viewer with diverse ways of seeing and perceiving treated in photography, different approaches that encourage a discourse about image and representation, reality and fiction. A qualitative selection of photographic works will be presented by the artists Sonja Braas, Balthasar Burkhard, Peter Hebeisen and Christian Vogt. Galerie Christian Roellin will show works by Thomas Floerschutz, Ilkka Halso and Robert Lebeck.

In her photographs the New York-based artist Sonja Braas (*1968, Siegen) plays with the viewer’s visual perception. A selection of works from her current series The Quiet of Dissolution will be on show, in which the elements or natural disasters, at times taking on their most extreme forms, are captured. Allusions of any kind as to the circumstances surrounding the incidents or the place of their occurrence are ommitted. Works by Braas are currently to be seen at the Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, and in the Kunstmuseum Bonn.

Balthasar Burkhard (*1944, Berne) counts among the great masters of international photo art. He achieved acclaim for his classic black-and-white shots in large format, a representative number of which are presented in The Best of Photography. His works tend to confuse, as they force the viewer into an interplay between inner and outer images. Before these pictures assume a definite form as photographs, however, they carry on an imaginary existence inside the artist’s mind. Elementary topics such as mountains, the desert, the sea, animals, trees or the city are specifically sought out and fathomed with respect to their content and aesthetics.

European Battlefields, the title of the photographs by Peter Hebeisen (*1956, Berne) presented in this exhibition, is significant. Battlefields are associated with atrocities, war, death and casualties. No such thing is to be seen in the works of Hebeisen. He captures images of abandoned, well-balanced landscapes, formerly European theatres of war. The images are remote from what is widely considered to be war photography. The artist’s aim is not to bring back to life the past, but to photographically document the concept of drama.

Christian Vogt (*1946, Basel) is the only artist in this show to attract notice to the human body. Three photographs are presented, – a nude, a semi-nude and an enlarged mouth – with the help of which the relation between reality and the photographic image is addressed. Simultaneously to the presentation at g27, the Fotostiftung Schweiz is highlighting the work of Christian Vogt in a one person show titled Today I‘ ve been you.
