Born 1961 in Brugg, Switzerland. Lives and works in New York, USA.
Arnold Helbling is using architecture’s relevance as his formal and conceptual framework for his paintings. The roots for this body of work are in Cubism, Constructivism as well as in Buckminster Fullers visionary thoughts. The paintings address the impact of the transformative conditions of man-made structures as well as they question the precarious balance of psychological patterns that shape big parts of our existence. The source images are the artist’s own or found photographs of architecture, crystalline formation, fractal imagery, digitally altered construction drawings, doodles, or sketches. The paintings have the backlit luminosity of stained glass windows thanks to layers of transparent and opaque colors that are contrasted by a branchlike network of black or white lines.
Helbling’s works are represented in international collections such as Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, Bern; City of Zurich, Switzerland; Aargauisches Kunsthaus, Aarau, Switzerland; Collection New School University, New York, USA; Centre Pasqu’Art, Biel, Switzerland; Neuberger Museum of Art, State University of New York, USA.
