Derek Bennett spent his childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, and lived in Cuba and in Texas from 1958 to 1960. He completed his studies in English literature, which he began in 1965, in Montreal in 1969. During this time he was already involved with photography, which became increasingly important to him. In Texas he worked for two years for an advertising photographer and moved to Europe in 1971. Before settling in Schaffhausen in 1973, he traveled through Europe and North Africa. Derek Bennett was active not only as a photographer but also as a writer, for magazines such as “Printletter”, “Photographie”, “Creative Photography” and for the magazine “European Photography”, founded in 1980.
