Born 1960 in Mitlödi, Switzerland. Lives and works in Basel, Switzerland.
Based on earlier experiences in pharmaceutical research, Hofmann’s art combines scientific interest with an aesthetic examination of painting. The repertoire of forms has echoes of the world that opens up under the microscope. In his works, inner organic structures, hidden to the naked eye, seem to float and flow into each other on the surface of the painting. Hofmann’s empirical approach and his urge to gain knowledge through the painting process and to conduct basic research also link his earlier work with paintings. The artist traces the inherent laws of painting, with its colours and materials, and the role of light.
Hofmann’s works are represented in international collections such as Kunsthaus Graz, Austria; Villa Arson, Nizza, France; Kunstverein Freiburg, Germany; Kunsthaus Glarus, Switzerland; Museum Franz Gertsch, Burgdorf, Switzerland; Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz.
