Jean Dieuzaide

(FRA)

Born in 1921 in Grenade-sur-Garonne, France. Died in 2003 in Toulouse, France.

Introduced to photography by his father, Jean Dieuzaide began taking photographs shortly before the Second World War. Early on and until 1971, he signed much of his work with the pseudonym «Yan», out of a concern that photography might not be a respectable occupation. He first gained fame as a photojournalist by documenting the liberation of Toulouse in 1944, taking the first official portrait of General de Gaulle and also for the portrayal of Salvador Dalí swimming at Cadaqués. Many of his reportages appeared in the international press, such as in «Life». Dieuzaide’s work is diverse, starting in the style of Humanist Photography he later also practiced abstraction. He was a member in several groups, such as «Le Groupe des XV», «Les 30 x 40» and «Libre Expression». Though Dieuzaide began as a photojournalist it was his travel and architectural photography that appeared in books from the 1950s on. In the 1970s he founded the gallery «Le château d’eau – pôle photographique de Toulouse» in an old water tower. It is estimated that his work consists of nearly one million negatives. He received numerous prizes and awards, amongst them the Niépce Prize in 1955 and the Prix Nadar in 1961.

Jean Dieuzaide’s works are represented in international collections including the Met Museum, New York, USA; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, USA; Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, France; and for the most part in the Archives municipales, Toulouse, France.
