Born in 1961 in Geneva, Switzerland. Lives and works in Den Haag, Netherlands and Bruxelles, Belgium.
The work of Robert Suermondt is considerably hybrid in nature. He starts from photos which he cuts out of newspapers and magazines and works them into a painting. Or he photographs fragments of people in the street. Often, he focuses on the image of the masses, human activity the way it is portrayed in mass media. Paintings with vibrating edges, left-out faces, white openings, cut-outs with pasted-in media photos: all of them attempts to make the authoritarian all-encompassing image more porous, to open it up.
