Born 1966 in Basel, Switzerland. Lives and works in Basel, Switzerland.
The interest of the Swiss artist Thomas Ritz lies in the representational depiction of ambivalent motifs, imaginary, constructed landscapes, seemingly frozen scenes or figures and animals in the broadest sense. The artist’s works are based on memories, his own or found photographs, media images, film stills or show echoes of art history. In part, current political situation pictures also find their way into his work. A sublime, eerily beautiful balance distinguishes his work: For all the beauty of his painting, there is always a precarious moment of loneliness, vulnerability, transience or even threat.
Ritz’s works are represented in international collections such as the Sammlung Keller-Wedekind-Stiftung, Zurich, Switzerland;
Collection Betty & Hartmut Raguse-Stauffer, Basel, Switzerland; Collection Jean-Christophe Ammann, Frankfurt, Germany; Collection of the Hessischen Landesmuseum Darmstadt, Germany.
