The term art cabinet (in German „Kunstkabinett“, „Kunstkammer“ or „Wunderkammer“) derives from the earlier cabinets of rarities or curiosities and denote a concept of the early phase of the art collection’s history that arose in the Baroque period and presented objects with different origins and purposes together side by side.
In the exhibition Art Cabinet at Fabian & Claude Walter Galerie, a fictitious contemporary art collection is used to show how such an art cabinet could look like today and tomorrow. The focus of this exhibition, however, is less on curious objects such as narwhal teeth, unicorn horns or valuable pieces of jewelry, but rather presents a diverse selection of paintings, photographs and sculptures by the gallery’s artists, each of which stands out for its complex production process, special technique or conceptual approach.
